This sent me off on a mini-quest. Sadly Google proved more useful than my 
library; ah well. The the body is indeed a weave, a Pott's weave. The 
material is likely Rayon floss as that is what Roberts seemed to have used. 
BTW, he had a well-known commercial fly-tying business including a shop in 
Boulder. The rear third of the body is ribbed with ostrich herl (my best 
guess). Clearly there's also an underbody to yield that shape.
It's very unlikely that the trout were actually taking White Gloved Howdies 
as they are a stream insect but obviously they liked the nymph --- much 
more likely the pattern resembles a local damsel or dragon.
