Jack, Thanks for the story- very interesting. I’ve got some ‘upgrades’ to the basic pattern for you to try. Lots of variations in Google images, but no rope-dub grub patterns.
Wisconsin is the ‘home’ for this pattern, isn’t it? I was introduced to the Pink Squirrel at that time and landed a few trout with a tenkara rod. On returning to Indianapolis I ventured to the local pond with the Pink Squirrel still attached and decided what the heck let's just toss it in and see what happens. The fly hit the surface and about a foot under the water a big, really big sinister silver thing flashed on the fly and immediately broke me off.
