I figure I lose about 20% of my flies during the
season, usually my favorite ones, too. Go figure. It's
funny, though, I will go several outings without
losing any and then lose 5 or 6 per on the next couple
of outings. Most are lost to bottom snags or are
sacrificed to the shrubbery gods. Some are break offs
(usually knot failure rather than actual tippet
breaks). I have to say I don't lose as many as when I
first started, maybe with more experience I will lower
my attrition rate. One funny thing, though is I
usually find about 8 or 10 flies and/or lures over the
course of a season, some of them pretty nice, too.
