Another question about wings. Since most mayflies that I've observed sit with their wings upright and together; why do we separate the wings when tying an imitation? It is a major struggle for me to get this part exactly right and so, many times, I skip the separating step and leave the bundle of hackle undivided. The fish don't seem to mind and when I put the fly in a tree on the first cast I don't mind quite as much either.
