I would disagree on the basis that Mr. Herter's statement doesn't
provide any defining parameters other than 5x. He doesn't say whether
it makes any difference if your using a 6wt rod or a 3wt. How strongly
you lift your rod definitely makes a differenc as we all know from sad
experiences (tests, right?) I read that book(copyright 1961) a while ago,
and I don't remember if he said how he tested
the breaking strength of the tippets. Maybe tied to a nail with a scale
between the tippet and the leader?
But I'm not sure that the rod as a shock absorber theory works either.
I do know some people are fond of gum rubber as a part of their leaders
to protect light tippets. Anyway, this could be good area for further
research.
But I'll probably just keep breaking even 3x tippets by more means than
George ever imagined.

disagree!
The rod works like a shock absorber and a 5 x tippet (with +/- 5 lbs
breaking strength) will never break due to continuous pulling it will break
due to the shocks
just my 2 cents..

"Lifting your rod tip to set the hook uses up all but one ounce of a
5X tippet's strength, so be careful. Play the fish by holding you
rod level and pointed at the fish will all pressure on your reel, not
your rod. Contrary to opinion your leader will take more strain
played directly on your reel than or your rod.
