Hello All, Well, of the 480 some odd list members, 11 sent me a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the "Off the Wall" swap. Flies are in the mail today and should be to you soon.
Each swap participant is receiving 2 flies and samples of Daiichi hooks. One style is the Daiichi 1182. This is their standard dry fly hook with the "Crystal Finish". The other style hook is a Daiichi 1480. This is a sweet little 2x short, fine wire dry fly hook with a Limerick bend. It may sound odd but the flies, especially soft hackles, tied on these hooks are sexy little numbers. Both of these models are available through Byard at Linesend.com Everyone is receiving a Steelhead October Caddis. These are tied on Partridge CS10/1 hooks and are tied in a traditional low-water style. The body is a synthetic seal substitute and the wing is natural deer hair. This fly is a popular Northwest pattern for late summer/early fall steelhead. For the second fly, some will receive my Miracle Caddis, others will receive my Y-Fly. The Miracle Caddis is tied with an Antron trailing shuck, Scintilla dubbed body (hare's ear color), fine deer hair wing, and a Scintilla dubbed head (ripe olive color). The hook is the Daiichi 1182. Pictures of this fly are available by searching the VFB site or by following the link in my sig line. The Y-Fly is constructed with an Antron shuck, Scintilla dubbed body (hare's ear color again) and a fine deer hair wing. The wing is tied facing forward, extending out over the eye of the hook. It is also canted slightly upward and divided into two equal parts. To look at the fly from the side it somewhat resembles the venerable Quigley Cripple; from the top it looks like the letter "Y", hence the name. It has proven itself as a both an emerger and a spinner and is durable, easy to tie and, like most of my patterns, constructed of readily available and inexpensive materials. Until later...
