Good friend of mine is director of the ER at Mercy Memorial.  He probably removes 25-50 hooks each year and has a special technique.  Basically it involves threading a line through the bend of the hook, then pressing down on the eye of the hook - against the flesh, then yanking hard and fast on the line in the opposite direction of the entry of the hook.


Those same instructions are contained in most first aid manuals and kits.  It works, and is easy.  The only problem is that it takes some guts to try it the first tie, particularly on yourself!
