Paddling just as the ice is out is a wet and cold adventure.   Also, if you try using a dodger spoon with a streamer, your arms will just about fall off to get any action.  I agree to avoid a transom mount off the back - use one on the side.
 
A motor is a decent thing to have in a river for obvious reasons.

Why bother with a motor at all?  Paddles work just fine and are a lot less of a hassle.
