I just read an article somewhere about hot melt glue as a substitute for epoxy and 
more.  In addition to building up heads, you can build up other structures as well, 
such as a yolk sack on a mylar minnow.

I've also just made a few "epoxy" ants, using Tulip brand dimensional paint (available 
at craft stores)  I tied the ants, and coated them with crystal glitter paint.  This 
stuff stands up thick during drying (and therein lies the rub:  it takes 36 hours to 
become water proof)

the crystal glitter over black foam looks great.

They also make a paint that expands after it dries.  After 36 hours, you steam it, and 
it puffs up.  Good for eyes.
