Thanks,   Joyce

You would think as common as this fly is, there would be lots of info out  there.   I have only found a couple of sites with instructions.

Subject: Re: [VFB] Sowbug Tying Instructions

Here's how we tie them for the Provo River
1.  Thread..usually red
2.  Body, pearl rainbow scud dubbing (you can make your own..if you want to do this and need the recipe, kindly email me off list).
3. Hook: 94840 or shrimp hook, usually sizes 16 and 18 here but I'm sure other sizes would work as well.
4. Back alimentary line: peacock herl or holographic gold
5. shell: thin strip of plastic baggie cut in about 3/16 width
1. put hook in vise and tie on thread.
2.  tie in the peacock herl or strip of thin gold holographic tinsel
3.  (optional..tie in a piece of the clear/green holographic flash)
4.  tie in the strip of baggie
5.  Now, dub onto the thread, at the hook bend, a very thick amount of dubbing..I mean, about 1/8 inch of dubbing. Wrap it around the hook to the eye, leaving room for a red head the length of the eye.  Tie and make a half hitch.
6. bring the peacock herl or piece of gold tinsel forward and tie down at the eye.
7. If you use holographic clear, bring it foward and tie down at the head.
8. finally, bring the baggie over for the shell and tie down and make a head and whip finish.
Now, using the dubbing needle, your tooth brush, a dental broach or gun cleaning brush or all of the above, really pick out the dubbing so it is very fluffy. As sow bugs are flat and rather round looking from the top and bottom, push your finger up into the center and trim the bug so it is a rounded but slightly oval shape. Add head cement if you so desire. This is a mainstay of year round fishing in smaller sizes here. Hope this helps. Joyce
