They could sell Mack trucks as fly tying material but that don't make it so.

Still, I would maintain that anything that can be presented with a fly rod (ie, casting the weight of hte line rather than the "lure") is in fact a "fly" in the most generic sense of the word.  The 1040 looks as much like a fly as a lot of other patterns do.  

Is there really a difference between tying with soft plastic as opposed to foam, or, for that matter, any other synthetic material?

Just my thoughts.
