When I think of a fly, I have an image of the leader stretching out above the water with the fly about to kiss the surface. That is, I think of the fluid motion of its delivery and what we stick to the hook second.
Therefore, I have a very liberal definition of what a fly is. To me, a fly is any lure that can only be cast on a fly line without significant modification or accessories (such as a casting bubble, or when used as trailer on a spoon, you get the idea).

On second thought, what's the first image that pops into your head if you
hear the question, "What is a fly?"
I'd be interested to hear responses of the first fly everyone pictured.
I'll hold mine for now.

For me it is my all round favorite fly for anything I fish for, The Elk Hair Caddis.
