I went on the first trip of the season today!! Picked up my new license (FINALLY!!) My sister and I went to one of my favorite spots on the river, Burrels Ford. She talked me into leaving the fly rod at the house, so I took my casting gear.
Wouldn't you know it, but there was a Caddis AND a Stonefly hatch in full swing! As you can imagine I was heartbroken. Here I am in the middle of the first hatch of the season (for me) and not a fly in sight!!
We saw many fine fish sipping at the surface, and a few nice ones that were "bulging" the surface. I presume they were taking the emergers and the egg layers.
It wasn't a total loss though. I was out on the water, we caught and released a total of three nice fish, 2 bows and a spec that would have made a gem mine jealous.
All in all a good day!
PS...... The Caddis were black with black and brown mottled wings, about 1/2 inch long. The Stone fly were yellow and about 1 1/2-2 inches long. Any idea of the species?
