Still planning and the prices
>here shot up to $1.72 yesterday in tow

Rene & Jimi;
It's business at its worst.  In the 50 mile stretch between PA and MD the gas companies prices start at $1.49 just over the PA line, go up a few pennies each 5-10 miles you travel until you hit the maryland suburbs where it tops out at $1.92.  Small towns seem to have lower prices while busy sections command the highest prices.  Now understand the oil companies direct each station as to price and usually the station across the street has the exact same price or within a penny or two.  The terminals for the same stations are in Baltimore.

Today's Post said MD is demanding that gas stations not sell gas under cost!  What gives?  In my office products business we commonly sell loss leaders under cost just as grocery stores do and there is no law stopping us.  Believe me, nobody is losing money this way.  Averaging costs to stimulate sales is not new.  I think they make it up on the west coast at $2.70 or so a gallon.
