These two techniques will only work if:
1. You have access to photo processing software that can open and resize scanned or digital camera images. The software must be able to keep you informed of the final file size you are creating. For my money Adobe Photoshop Elements is the best choice for casual Windows PC and Mac users.
2. And/or: you have your own web site or web page, including free web sites and pages offered by the various services.
Technique 1:
a. Install a photograph of your choice on your web site. Open that photograph or page with your web browser (ie. Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Opera, Safari) and copy the web address of the PHOTO (URL) to your clipboard. If you can grab the URL from another existing web site (not necessarily your own, that will also work). Try to keep the physical size of the photo relative chosen relatively modest.
b. In your email message to VFB, put the following code where you want the photo to appear...IMPORTANT NOTE - remove the period from the code (the second character in the sample below) from your final message otherwise this won't work.
Put this code in (remove the second character, the period). The quotes around the filename are necessary, and also the < > brackets around all the code.

Here's an example with the period left in:

and the final code with the period removed.

The above will display either a photo or a clickable or copyable link in your email. Not all email software will display the photo directly. This technique doesn't burden the VFB server because the image is just a text link in the email, the photo resides on your web page.
Technique 2:
a. Reduce the size and bit-depth of your photograph and then ATTACH it to a short email with little text.
Soren Finne has been successful in sending small photos 5kb and smaller by attachment. If you remember the Norse sayings done earlier, those were attachments that kept the total file size of the message small enough that it made it past the rejection filter of the list server software settings.
so if I haven't totally botched the instructions, here's to a more colorful message board!
