Hi Folks,
Been having a lot of time to "Think" while I recuperate. Have this real
"CRAZY" idea I'm playing with. We have a form of cactus that grows to over
12' out here. A friend of mine brought me some after we talked about it and
I have made an interesting discovery. The outer 1/4 to 3/8" of it is very
similar to the power fibers of our beloved cane. Since we are too short on
$$ right now to get any cane I am experimenting with making a rod out of it.
So far the initial testing is going good, it planes very nicely, has a lot
of "Resilience" and several pieces held together seam to act very much like
the beloved Tonkin Cane.
If all goes well will have a couple of "Test" blanks glued up soon and
will see if it works. Who Knows, I could have a real "Desert Eagle Rod",
made with cactus rod, cactus handle material, Mesquite reel seat and
Mesquite and Osage Reel. Would definitely be something "Different" and
unique. Am still playing with the idea of a 2 piece Osage 6' 4 wt.
