Howdy Everyone,
Got back Monday evening (late) from 9 days in the Sierra Back
Country... Here's the promised report (& I'm keeping it fairly Short)

Hiked in the First day to Lake Gilmore in the Desolation
Wilderness, whihc is west of Lake Tahoe.. Bringing a Backpacking
float tube with me the first time... I fished steady 2 full days..
Results: one solid Hook up on a Black/Peacock wooly Bugger, then
whatever it was (I'm certian it was a sizable Lake Trout) Spit the
fly... Oh well.
Did get to see about 25 Lake Trout that some Biologists had Gill
netted in the Lake.. they disected the Lake Trout for Genetic
Information on their Lifestyle... Seems there is a Movement to
re-establish the LAHONTAN CUTTHROAT (O. Clarki Henshawi) back into as
much of it's Native waters in the Tahoe basin as is Possible... One
of the Lake Trout they netted went an easy 6 pounds!!!! Damn I would
have loved to hook that monster....
Interesting for my firat vist to the Desolation Wilderness.. But it
was windy almost all the time & other then that one hook up I caught
NOTHING.... Oh Well....

We headed south to the small town of Coleville, then went abit
furturer south & drove the rather rough dirt road up to Rodriquez
Flats.. There we went into the Carson Isberg Wilderness to try for
PAIUTE CUTTHROAT (O.C.Seleniris).. First off we headed right instead
of Left & ended up doing a 8 mile detour from our planned route
(which was actually well worth it.. The gorge of the East Fork of the
Carson River is impressive!!!!) We ended up at the downstream end of
Lower Fish Valley on Silver King Creek about 8:45 at night.. wierd
setting up camp as it's getting progressively darker amoungst Trees..
We ate dinner at about 9:30 pm...
The Next Morning we slowly but steadily worked our way amoungst the
Meadow grasses in Lower Fish Valley fishing Silver King
Creek..working towards Llewellyn Falls (you cannot fish above the
Falls...where there is nothing but Pure Paiute Cutthroat) Lotsa of
the Rainbow/Cutts hybrids rising to our dryflies... The hit the Fly
pretty hard for small trout.. However, here & there you would rise a
Paiute Cutthroat...I have never had a Trout that took a Dryfly soo
soft & delicate.... I had to force myself to slow do responce time so
I could hook one... I lost probally 12 before I Finally hooked &
landed my First Paiute!!!!!!!!
A beautiful Little Cutthroat sub-species (Those of you who own a
copy of Behnke's Book flip to page 217, you'll see what I mean)
Literally no spots on the flanks of this Jewel!!!!!!.. Unfortunately
I couldn't get a photo because the little beauty flipped out of my
left hand as i was readying my camera....Still my mind's eye
remembers it well.... BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!
There is some promising news in regards to the Future of the
Paiute Cutthroat....As I get concrete facts I'll inform the rest of
you... I'll put it this way "Flyfishing only, Catch &
Release...Above......"

All in all a Great Trip & I got to add Cutthroat Sub-species #3 to
my Native Trout list....

          DEAN...
