Subject: [VFB] Strange Fish

Yesterday I caught four little fish that were tough fighters, fast as
lightning, and unknown to me. I was fishing a deep pool at the tail of a
nice riffle on a spring creek in my neighborhood that is a tributary of a
larger, tidal river.

The fish were about 8 inches long, dark grey on the back and gold
underneath, with a reddish tail. They were shaped like trout, and fought
like trout, but with scales that were very noticable. Not as large scales
as a similar size carp, and no barbels on the mouth, and the mouth wasn't
fleshy. I didn't pay attention to the shape of the dorsal fin (I know, this
is important).

They were hanging around the tail of the riffle in about 6 feet of water,
and catching one didn't discourage the others at all. On four casts, I
caught four fish.

Anyone have any idea what they might be? I'm wondering about juvenile small
mouths or for some reason the word "chub" keeps coming to mind. They felt
soft in the hand, as opposed to bluegills which feel firm. Actually trout
have that same hand feel.
