Probably easier without the bird attached.....

Try grabing just the tip of the feather and stroking down toward the end.
Tie in just the tip as close to the stem as possible. Cut off the tip of the
feather and wind one wrap at a time while stroking back the barbules that
stick straight up. Use three of four wraps and tie off.
If they do not fold back, you can take a smooth ball point pen and throw a
half hitch on it and slide the ball point pen over the eye of the hook far
enough that you are pushing the barbules back. Release the half hitch, and
whip finish.
