As a relatively new fly tier it pretty expensive to buy these fine dryfly fethers and I'm often forced to buy some of a less good quality.

You should try the better quality hackle . . . you won't be satisfied with the cheap stuff any more. With the cheap capes, how many of the feathers are useable? good length? not too webby? I find that it takes several cheap capes to compare to one good cape.
