Ray, i normally microwave everything too. Especially the stuff i get in
trades, out of cheapo bins in fly shops, or off my own birds. Sometimes i'll
even wash it before i microwave it. The stuff you wanna use instead of moth
balls is called Enoz Moth Crystals, or Enoz Moth Nuggetts. Enoz is the BEST
and that's just the brand name. The reason you want it is because it has the
chemical in it that kills both the adults, eggs, and larva. I've currently
run out or i'd spell out that chemical for you. It's
Benz...................chloride, something or other. Powerful stuff, but it
works. Use it, and you'll never have a problem. I've been very fortunate to
have never had a bug investation. I keep all my necks in the bags they came
in/with Enoz and then in plastic tubs that are air tight. Living in the
Catskills you MUST be very careful NOT to let bugs get in your house as much
as you possibly can, which is much easier said than done. Spiders are the
main problem, far as pest go. They are EVERYWHERE, and get into EVERYTHING.
I loose more flies to spiders than anything out in the gallery. They seem to
particularly like soft hackle. But it's not to bad. I only seems to loose a
few flies a year that way.....no biggie. Good luck, mark(willowhead)

I try to throw the necks in the microwave for ten seconds (when my wife
goes to work), then place them back in the zip-locks and into the drawer
that I
keep all the necks in. Inside the drawer I have a bunch of moth balls. So
far,
knock wood, I haven't had a problem with bugs again. (I did have a problem
once when I use to keep everything all sorted out in order in shoe boxes. I
did
lose a lot of necks then and good tying materials too. But since I've been
throwing them into the microwave for between 10-15 seconds not a problem.
