Aaron, i'm not privy as to how long you've been tying, but if it's significantly less than 20 yrs., you'd probably better pretend you trying to get to Carnique (spelling?) Hall in a HUGE hurry. I'm sure your abilities are pretty good or you wouldn't even ask such a squestion. And you sound to me like a guy with confidence. But i'd venture to say that less than one percent of one percent of allllllll fly tyers make their living at it. There are something like 2 million fly tyers in the United States, you do the math. Unless your Marvin Nolte, (and even his wife "works") it's a hard row to hoe. If your ANYWHERE near Boston, Mass.? Get yourself to the United Fly Tyers meeting tomorrow night and speak with Jack Gartside about it. He's doing the program. He partially makes his living tying flies, along with personall apperances, and writing, etc. He started tying at 15, and will be 60 on Dec. 7th. I was going to the meeting, but got asked to represent TGF at a meeting of public scooping concerning an Enviornmental Impact Study in regards to a proposed gambling Casino on the Neversink River, in Monticello, N.Y. Damm i wish i could make that UFT meeting. If you go, have a ball. mark(willowhead)

Aaron asked:

how does one go about finding a fly tying job? >

Start small, by going to local fly shops and sporting goods stores to see if
there's some interest there. If you live near fishing waters, check the
local "Mom and Pop" grocery store, where fishermen stop to pick up what they
forgot to bring on their trip...they might carry a few flies. Guides and
Resort stores are also possibilities. Try to develop private customers as
well as shops. In my experience, putting flies on consignment is a BAD
idea.
As for the "living" you can make tying flies, it's best to talk yourself
into being satisfied with a rather meager life-style! ;o)
