Steve it really depends on the type of flies you will be tying... but in general when learning tying flies say for trout I'd suggest the following:

Tying hte following patterns teaches some basic techniques..

1. Black and Peacock
2. Wooly Worm
3. Cochy Bondu/Red Tag or similar
4. Mayfly Spinner (in any colour, yellow, orange, red, bown)
5. Quill bodied dry fly
6. Hare and Copper Nymph
7. Haiir winged Streamer

To tie all this you can get by with the following:

Hooks (#8, #10, #12 long shank down eye will get you by to start with)
Brown or Furnace Cock Hackle feathers (you can buy just feathers/ a half or full genetic cape/ but if beginning, a reasonable indian/chinese cape will give a variety of feather sizes to learn on)
White Cock Hackle feathers
Packet of peacock herl (you always need this !!)
Calf Tail (or squirrel tail)
some woollen yarn (Grey, red, black, brown) great for making your own dubbing or winding bodies (I buy mine from craft store)
Hares Mask (or suitable similar fur dubbing or substitute)
Gold and silver tinsel /fine wire.
Thread brown and Black in 6/0 and 8/0

Equipment:
Vise
Hackle pliers
Bobbin Holder
Cuticle Scissors (from drug store)
Varnish (Bottle of clear nail varnish is adequate)
Whip Finish tool (to start with you can make a half hitch tool out of a pen case...)

Thanks Desert Eagle,
I have tried browsing,
but I really don't know what I need.
I don't know what is a good buy, and when I see 60 dollars, I cringe.
I wish there was a basic list.
I wish someone would put together a basic kit of Hackles,
necks and capes that a beginner
Should look for so he would know what he
needs to start building a fly tying kit.
Good quality stuff.
Something that the old guys would be proud of.
I hope I made sense.
