John,
Another option that would be similar to rabbit strips would be pine squirrel
strips. Eric Schmeuker (sp?) of Wapsi Fly Company ties a pine strip crawdad
that looks great. He says it is awesome for smallmouths. It is tied with a
lead dumbbell on the hook (which by the way was invented by his dad). He
then ties a strip of pine squirrel out the back on each side as the pincers,
with the hide facing out. He then wraps another pine strip around the hook
shank and up to and around the lead eyes. I think the pattern is a little
bit more complicated than that but not much. The skin on the strip gives a
little bit more substance than just fur. I have also seen a pattern by Doug
Christian of St. Louis. I think it is on the Ozark Fly Fishers web site and
it has tufts of rabbit hair for the pincers. Hope this helps.

I thought of squirrel tail too, but it will not flow the same as fox tail
would. I could use rabbit strips I bet.
