"When casting distances shorter than 30 feet, a
heavier line may match the rod flex better. When casting beyond 30 feet ,
a lighter line may match. Although lines vary, there is some truth to the
statement that fore very 5 feet of line beyond the taper the line weight
increases by one weight. For example, a 5-wt line (at 4.9 grains per foot)
would require about 4 feet to accumulate 20 grains, the AFTMA line range.
A 3-wt (at 3.5 grains per foot) would require about 5.5 feet to accumulate 20
grains. As line extends or recovers during casting, it virtually becomes many
different lines."
