Once I saw a great thing happen in the water that has remained one of my
favorite memories. Hiking out from a lake near Guanella Pass in Colorado one
autumn afternoon I stopped to drink from the small stream that the trail
occasionally crossed. There was a fair amount of grass right along the bank so
I got down on my stomach to put my face in the water. This was next to a small
hole, maybe eight feet long real pocket water.
Much to my surprise I spotted two small brookies in the current. They were
very easy to spot because of their behavior, which I was able to watch for
maybe ten minutes. Given that it was autumn, I assume that they must have been
courting. It was incredibly beautiful. They would swim leisurely up to the
head of the pool, then one would bite down gently on a pectoral fin of the
other, they would both go completely limp and allow the current to tumble them
slowly down the length of the pool.
It was like fallen leaves being rolled along in mild turbulence. When they
reached the end, the holder would let go and theyd swim again to the start.
They repeated this again and again. Its one of the most graceful things Ive
ever witnessed. Their bodies would touch during most of the tumbling.
Many other wonderful recollections come to mind, but that experience with those
two little brook trout was thoroughly special.
