Right on Bob......in fact in a case like that, you don't even nessessarily need "True" Cree.......that which exhibits all five colors. Lot of tyers do what you explained, and it works just fine. BTW folks keep your ears and eyes peeled for a new (soon to be out) book on Crayfish/Crawdads by Jim Krul, of The Fly Fishing University show(s), formally of English Angling Trappings, and also now acting/interim executive director of the CFFC&M. mark......

Rene with the quality of today's hackle one should do it.  When you look
at the age of the recipe of the fly being tied.  Those flys where being
tied with Chinese necks.  When grizzly and brown are called for I will
often use Cree.

 I recently run through some of my tying books.
When it came to hackling a dry fly, they very often called for 2
hackles, which were wound one after the other to build the hackle.

When I tie my own dry flies, I usually take one hackle, especially when
I use saddle feathers. How do y'all do this?
