Over the weekend I had the opportunity to go and fish the Williams river in
North Central Massachusetts. This is much larger water than I am used to
and I was having a great deal of difficulty with my casting. I was nymphing
with both a poly yarn indicator and some weight on the line and could not
get the line up and out of the water. I am using a Cabelas PT (8.5 foot 5
wt) rod which I have been very happy with in smaller streams and with small
dries. I was nymphing on the Tongariro river (also very big water) in NZ a
few weeks ago with a 7 weight Sage rod and had no trouble lifting and
rolling a similar set up. My question is what is the best reasonably priced
rod for deep nymphing? Is a fast action or slow action what I want and do I
need a heavier rod to throw the indicator and weight? What are folks
thoughts on this??
