Alex,
I have made some of the cased caddis in a couple of different ways. One that worked the best was using a sz 14 1X long hook.
Wrapped an underbody with lead wire and some narrow yarn.
Coated it with head cement and dropped it in my waste catcher on the vise. Rolled it around a bit. Took it out and did some trimming with the scissors, I had a cased caddis. I have used fine aquarium sand and debris from the yard.

I frequently see cased caddis in trouts stomachs (yes, I do eat a few fish) and have seen some very convincing imitations of this insect; however I have also read that trout scour the bottom, removing them directly from the rock making presentation nearly impossible. How successful have people been with these cased caddis patterns?
