I have been preaching this for years and am surprised at how many old time tyers don't know about it. Saturday at the Conclave, I had a couple of old timers watching me telling a newbee about hackles. Showing him how to find the "sweet" part of the hackle and leaving a bare stem to start the wrap. After the newbee left, they sat down and started asking me about the bare stem. Another thing about the bare stem, on the last wrap of the hackle. back off 1/2 turn, strip the barbs and finish the wrap with a bare stem. Makes for a neat tie off.

Right Rene, ALWAYS strip a few extra barbs of hackle off the far side of the feather at the tye in point. "Start" the first turn clean for the first 1/8 of an inch or so. And if your gonna use more than one hackle, leave tiny gaps in the first one(s wraps), so as to get the second one in between the gaps, and make sure to wiggle (when needed) the second one as you wrap it, to keep from pinning down the first wraps. mark....

Murf,
I'm not shure about your problem, but when it is about propper hackling, I usually leafe a bit a free hackle steem at the tie-in point. The first wrap is with the bar steem, then come the barbs.
Dubbing the hackle area helps additionally.
But I'm sure, you know this anyway

So&what do you WANT your hackle to look like?
Chris,
I want the dry fly to look like it has wings and legs and not like a blur of spikes. Most of my flys come out fine but sometimes the hackle splays and the result is a fly that catches fish but not my fancy. I suppose that I am getting picky in my old age or just vain in trying to impress other tyers that my flys are well/properly tied.
