Thankx for the link Martin. I see no reason at all not to tye flies on just about any type of hook out here. I've been using bait hooks for years sometimes. Just whatever, whenever so-to-speak. Found some real cool blue hooks once, but i can't remember the maker. I've used Eagle Claw hooks a lot, especially their saltwater models. Don't ask for the model numbers though. I probly couldn't find them. Point is, when you find yourself in a tacle shop of any kind, always take a look at the hook section. You never know what you'll find that can be used. I've got one hell of a hook(s) collection because i've been scrounging around for hooks for many years. And when in a fly shop, always go take a look in the "Cheapo Bin," there's usually some hooks in there too. Very often, what the store can't sell, you can use, and you'll get 'em cheap. mark...

I don't have the original box but I'm sure these were called "All Around". I looked in vain on the Mustad web site for a picture so maybe they don't make them any more. I'll just have to take a picture. but I'll make another stab at describing it: The eye is level, then it immediately makes a 45 degree bend up almost straight until it curves slightly to its highest point above the eye and curves down until the curve is directly across from the eye on the opposite end, then it makes a very abrupt turn back in straight toward the eye which terminates very quickly into the barb.

Tom, you had me shaking my head with the "All Around" description of a
Mustad hook. Then I remembered the Mustad 3777. Is this the hook you
were referring to? This is a great hook for tying keel style streamers
as well; I'm doing an article on them. Don't be put off with the crazy
sizes (a #24 is well over an inch long!). Or are you thinking of the
English bait-hook style?

For Jimi
SJWs are tied on big hooks as well; I've seen them on #2 English bait
hooks.
