Mike, one more tip. Make sure you go out and get yourself a pair of the the finest tipped scissors that Dr. slick makes. They are VERY pointed. I think they may be called the arrow model. Best investment you'll ever make. You'll need them when you make your trim of whatever amount of hackle you decide to eliminate before wraping. That cut needs to be extremely accurate and VERY close to the stem. mark...

I do it as Al and Gretchen Beatty taught me..tie in the feather by the point, take the OUTSIDE edge of the scissors and simply hold the hackle under tension and run that outside edge along the hackle stem, it will put a bend in the barbs and it will fold like a champ as you pull it and guide it with your fingers and run it around the hook shank (or if you are the lucky owner of a Norvise or other rotary vise, then you simply spin the vice and it will lay, wrap after wrap, nicely folded).
