Well you guys are just a wealth of information. The next time I get stuck
on a word in one of these old salmon books I'll just put it to the list.
:-) I never thought of using the Cambridge dictionary... another useful
book for fly tying!!!

Thanks,

Deb

Well I must admit I was taken aback the first time I was told that I was a
"bit cheeky".

Anyway, there is a connection between the word fag meaning a cigarette and
fag being a derogatory term for homosexual.

A fag in its older usage meant a glowing ember. Back when burning at the
stake was a common way of ending a person's life, it was deemed a waste of a
good firewood to burn a homosexual. Therefore, homosexuals were tossed on
the dying coals thereby tossing them onto the fags. Therefore the
derogatory term.

Anyway, when we took him for a walking tour of downtown Chicago he spotted a mate up the block walking towards us.... we of course didn't recognize him or know they were acquainted.... until he yelled out to his buddy.... "Can I bum a fag from you mate?" Which can have a very different meaning here in US. I was ready to crawl into the nearest crack in the building so not a soul would think I was with him. ROTFLMAO!!! Not something you will ever forget. I'm so thankful I made it through that day without anyone getting deeply offended by me. Deb
