Jay and I belong to the same TU group and fish together frequently. Here is the Pattern for his Patuxent Special:

HOOK: Mustad 9672 (streamer), sizes 6-12
Thread: Black, size 6/0
Tail: Fox squirrel tail
Body: Ginger chenille, weighted
Hackle: Ginger (palmered), 2-3X hook gap

This fly was originated by Jay Sheppard. It has been one of the best all around flies we have fished. Jay created it for the purpose of imitating the crawfish.

Personal note: when tying in the Fox Squirrel tail make sure that the black barring on the fox squirrel tail is exposed just beyond the bend of the hook. This information was passed on to me by Jay.

BTW, the Patuxent River is located in Maryland and the catch-and-release area is stocked by the PPTU (Potomac Patuxent Trout Unlimited) Chapter. This pattern and more information on trout fishing in Maryland can be found in the "Guide to Maryland Trout Fishing - The Catch-and-Release Streams" by Charlie Gelso & Larry Coburn who just happen to be PPTU members.

Jay also has modified the pattern using a cone head and calls the pattern a Super Patuxent Special.
