Went fishing today for the first time in many months. It was clearly evident
from my attempts at what resembled casting.
On the way to the river, driving at 100km/hr in pitch black, I managed to
dodge two big kangaroos, and a scraggly pair of wombats, but a possum wasn't
so lucky. I actually think it was a suicide.
I left home 2am for a 445am start. Thought I'd do an early morning workout
with some oversized, baitfish hunting whale sized trout but they slept in,
as I should have. The rest of the day went quickly. It was in the
mid-20s(Celcius) and I managed to catch a huge sunburn. Arms, ears, face,
neck all resemble a bright orange egg fly.
Nothing was biting. The evening hatch saw me miss four rainbows and land one
itsy bitsy pounder. Oh well!!
I met some kid just starting fly fishing and gave him a two hour lesson on
river life, casting, how not to catch fish etc and then loaded him up with a
couple dozen flies. I hope he enjoys it as much as do.
All I can say is this was a great start to the season, despite the number of
fish caught.
