Hunters Angling was just sold.... Nicks closed shop and it's moving to New
Bedford. I don't know what it will be like now. Peggy Brenner will have to
check in on it and let us know! Hunters has changed hands before and Nick
did a wonderful job so maybe this owner will do good things also! I just
hope they keep the nice obscure salmon supplies Hunters has always carried.

If we all start tying full dressed Classic Salmon Flies maybe we can get
Byard to carry the goods!!! LOL How about it Byard???? Better yet you can
start raising the birds there! We need to start seeing some Argus and maybe
a Bustard or two running around the property. :) VBG
Seriously though if enough people are interested in dying I wonder if there
are some dyes that work well that come from the US that Byard might be able
to carry?
There is a company locally that makes Fleye dye? I'm not sure of the
name... I think it might be here in Providence. If he gets enough interest
in dyes he might already have a supplier. I've played with the kool aid and
egg dyes but I think the professional dyes are much nicer. Veniards is so
vibrant!!!
Eventually I want to try some of the natural dyes also but I'm not there
yet. So much to learn so little time. ;)
I wouldn't use boiling water either for dying furs and feathers. I had the
same thing happens with feathers on the skin when you nuke them for bugs.
You have to do it very slowly and I'm not sure I would do that.
Warm Regards,
Deb

Subject: Re: [VFB] Dying Feathers & Dye Suppliers

Dye Sources....Hunters carry Veniard Dyes....Blue Ribbon Flies and E.Hilles
have their own and all are dyes to match those use in fly tying. I use Ajax
dish soap to clean my materials and add to the dye as a wetting agent, Don,t

use hot water as necks can turn into boil chicken and deer hides turn into
glue..Room temperature or cool water I add to the dyes is what I use .Those
mistakes above, that is what happen when I use hot and boiling water many
years ago. But to test for the dye color, just dye a half dozen feathers at
a time and record the amount of time they were spent in the dye bath. Rinse
well with cold water and I use the exhaust ,the blower end ,on a vacuum
cleaner to dry my materials and for loose feathers I put them in a ladies
nylons hosiery and a exhaust hose in the open end and attach with a rubber
band. Necks I dry them while I hole them in my hand and I tack them to a
board with the skin up for drying the skin or put them between two !/4 inch

hardware cloth screens .Hair dryers work but don't use any heat settings.
