Practice, good casting style, use of perfectly ballanced equipment that is capable of distance casting. Not all 9 foot #5 rods will cast long distance. Not all 14 foot tournament beachcasters will throw 6 ounces of lead 200 yards. All things being equal if your casting distance with a particular rod and line is less than someone else's casting distance with that same rod and line then it is down to timing and casting style.
If all you need is distance use a shooting head setup.

<<<So, how do they do it, these guys who are throwing out line well over 100 feet? Anybody out there have any experience with distance casting? I seldom if ever have to cast that far when fishing (I have a hard time seeing a dry fly at 50 feet) but still I am curious how it is done. Tom >>>
