Paul & Neville
After I cut the ends of the tube with a razor I use a lighter to round the
end of the tube and remove any sharp edges so it won't wear on the leader.
It also gives the tube fly a nice finished look and helps keep the thread
wraps from slipping off the end of the tube. I found the plastic on the
Eppendorf to burn too easily which can be a bad thing if you're tying for
demonstration and it also can ruin your hard work. Most of Yuri's tubes do
have metal on them. He did put out some Scandinavian tubes that slip into
one another and don't have any metal. They are made to easily use cone head
on them but you can skip that part. The advantage to these would be that
you can slip a colored tube over a clear smaller diameter liner and you
would have an instant body color for your fly. Another advantage being the
hook sets right into the tubing so you don't have any need for junction
tubes if you want to set your hook into the fly. I think Frodin also
markets a similar system for tubes. I haven't played with these yet but
I've ordered some to add to my tube fly demo's.

Deb

Neville, better yet, they're available in Canada (althought priced in
US$).

I wrote about Yuri some years ago in TCFF and sent him some articles for
his magazine. I'm not sure what Deb meant when she said "burn" but I did
find the pipettes cracked very easily, even when casting. Unfortunately,
the use of metal tubes for Atlantic salmon is not allowed in most
Canadian jurisdictions and even in the one where it might be OK, the
rules are vague, and so folks who don't need the possible hassle stick
to plastic. I suspect waters in BC that are restricted to "artificial
fly" or "fly-fishing only" would be equally off-limits to metal.

My column in Eastern Woods & Waters will feature a series on tube-fly
tying, beginning at the beginning, starting later this year.

cheers
Paul
