Chuck,
You need to see the fly from below the level of the water, not from above.
You just miss too much if you only look at it from above. Just get a
clear
plastic container the size of a shoe-box. Store materials in it when
you're
not using it. THen use it to test flies and materials when you need to.
Only takes a few inches of water. THis method was indispensible when I
was
designing my sculpins many years ago. It took lots of tries to get them
right- to look like a fish swimming along the bottom. Tried and discarded
a
lot of materials, including rabbit strip, hackles, marabou, fox, etc.
Settled on mink and trimmed chinchilla.
