Well, first off, I see you're running:
1) xawtv-3.38
2) bttv: driver version 0.7.62 loaded
3) 2.4.3-20mdk

Take a look at changes just in:
http://bytesex.org/xawtv/changelog.html
since xawtv is up to 3.71 now,
bttv is up to 0.7.90,
and the latest kernel is 2.4.18 or so.

Not that upgrades always cure everything,
but there's been a lot of development since
the versions you're working with.
