Now xawtv is working without problems for me (although I have not explored most of its functionality: it is only a few days I have a tv card). Sorry for wasting your time. I am also run the NVidia proprietary X driver without problems. My video card is a Prolink GeForce 2 MMX 400 e my tv card is a Prolink PlayTV Pro. Maybe you have not completly configured xawtv and bttv for your tv card. Check the norm and input options in the xawtv configuration file.
