Now xawtv is working without problems for me (although I have not
explored most of its functionality: it is only a few days I
have a tv card). But it does not present the problem you describe
when run in Skipjack.

I am also run the NVidia proprietary X driver without problems. My
video card is a Prolink GeForce 2 MMX 400 e my tv card is a
Prolink PlayTV Pro.

Maybe you have not completly configured xawtv and bttv for your
tv card. Check the norm and input options in the xawtv configuration
file.
