I think I have experienced some similar problems - with audio getting
muted, switched to mono etc with some combinations of switches between
composite, tuner and radio.
I have some changes in my bttv modules that fix the problem for me; I need
to make a patch to remind myself of what it was about - perhaps it will
solve your problem too.
