with mplayer (option vesa) you can output videos to your VGA with no
X installed at all. (http://mplayerhq.hu)

mplayer -tv on:driver=v4l:width=768:height=576:outfmt=i420:device=/dev/video0:input=1 
-vc rawi420 -vo vesa
