It helps a lot.  Now I get static on the audio so I guess I'm not done 
yet.  I noticed that whenever I remove ~/.xawtv and it goes through 
"searching" for channels I get this:

scanning channel list us-cable...
1    ( 73.25 MHz): no station
2    ( 55.25 MHz): no station
3    ( 61.25 MHz): no station
4    ( 67.25 MHz): no station
...

I get good video, but static on the audio.  I'll try fine tuning things, 
but it would seem to me that I would get better audio on some channels 
than others.
