Interesting.  Is this so obvious in TV-technology circles that they
don't feel the need to document this anywhere?
Or do you have access to documentation not everyone has?

Somewhat, yes.  A quick glance seems to indicate that the actual processing
power needed to perform this filtering is too large for real-time
postprocessing using regular Pentium-233 MMX like technology.

Evidently, since filtering in software is prohibitively expensive.
