Hello,

I'm quite new to all of this v4l stuff. I just want to play around a little
bit, in oder to understand some things. I started some trys in december last
year but have had no time anymore until now to try some more.

Could anybody give me a hint, what is meant by "overlay" and which
"framebuffer" do you v4l folks mean. The one of the graphics card or some
memory X uses or some memory you assign yourself in your application? Is
overlay a technique, which copies the video image directly to a part of the
screen in X coordinates?

I had a short look to the sources of kwintv and xawtv and I downloaded this
explaination pages about devices, capture windows, ioctl and so on which
explains the things you can find in /linux/videodev.h...

First of all I would like to write a tiny, nice program which uses Qt and shows
the video images which are from my tv/capture card (from Composite1) in a Qt
widget nothing more, nothing less. And than I want to try some things and do
some more step by step in order to get the things and how to use the API.

Can anybody give me some hints for that? What's the difference between v4l and
v4l2 for example? Can I start with v4l and later change to v4l2? Does v4l2 work
with my 2.2.10 kernel (I'm waiting for the stable 2.4 release...)?

Is there a documentation anywhere out there, which explains some more, maybe
some more lowlevel?

Thank you very much and have a nice weekend!

Cheers,

Andreas
