Hi Ian,
I had similar trouble with xawtv(3.19). I upgraded to the latest and the trouble
was gone. Make sure you compile with the correct options (configure --help).
It seems your card is fully recognised and functional. I also think it's not
the Xfree4.0.1 driver, although I also use it and had similar trouble.
