Thanks! loading kcompat24 worked!
I did install and try modprobe bttv before with no luck, looks like it was
trying to load a joystick port for the emu10k sound card, with mine being a
pure soundblaster (using the sb module) I'm not sure where it pulled the
emu10k stuff from.
# modprobe bttv
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/emu10k1-joy.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

invalid IO or IRQ parameters
