if it sucks, what's a better alternative.
Cinelerra is, among other things a professional video editing system. It works
quite well for a number commercial enterprises including TV stations, professional
video production houses and movie studio's. It does a lot of things, however, sucking
is not one of them.
I am on the mailing list for Cinelerra and that is the best place to get help
installing/configuring/using this system. There are quite a large number of
knowledgeable users as well as the author of the system on that list. Also,
here is hint: If you present your lack of expertise as being the fault of the product
as you did on this list, don't expect any help at all: The majority of the users on
that list are professionals in the video/movie industry and literally do not have time
for BS.

Hint number two: Compiling Cinelerra from source can be a frustrating experience.
Beginners (Linux newbies as well as Cinelerra newbies...) really should use the
prebuilt binaries or either *carefully* read documentation to the source code.
