768x576 is the square pixel (1:1) variant of the "official" PAL resolution of 720x576 (CCIR601). The advantage of square pixel is that you don't need scaling over the display to make the ratio look good. I.e., every video pixel becomes a screen pixel and you're done. For CCIR601, the pixel ratio isn't exactly 1:1, so you need to rescale for playback/overlay for it to look as it's supposed to.
